Staff and Board

Mary M Bouknight, M.Ed., LSW, Founder and Executive Director

Mary is the Founder and Executive Director of The Messenger Center (TMC), a full-service, Christ-centered counseling and educational nonprofit organization launched in 2006. Her responsibilities include vision-casting, strategic planning, discipleship counseling, creating and implementing class material, and overseeing the ministry’s long-term and day-to-day ministry. More than 28 years of experience in counseling, psychology, mental health services, and social work have equipped Mary to serve children, teens, and adults in issues ranging from codependency recovery to boundary setting, discipleship, compulsive/addictive behavior, and trauma. Prior to founding TMC she worked in private practice, providing individual, marital, and family counseling including diagnostic assessment, treatment planning, connection to community resources, consultation with other professionals, recovery services, and curriculum development and implementation. Local agencies and faith-based groups have called upon her to train teachers, leaders, and volunteers in child abuse policies and healthy responses to child and family trauma victims. Mary also served as a counselor at the Sexual Assault Resource Center (Rock Hill, MD) for four years, where she also supervised counseling interns and developed specialized curriculum for victims and groups. Mary is a licensed master social worker. She holds a M.ED. with a Clinical Counseling focus from The Citadel (Charleston, SC) and a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Child & Family Development from Winthrop University (Rock Hill, SC).

Beverly Aiken, Executive Administrator

Beverly joined The Messenger Center in 2006 as a volunteer and in a staff role since 2010.  Her responsibilities include office management, bookkeeping, development, and leading classes. She brings thirty years of organizational and administrative experience to the center, both as a small business co-owner and as a real estate investor specializing in rehabilitation and renovation. Two decades in Christian ministry (including stints as a Christian Education Director, Activities Director, Bible study leader, and Celebrate Recovery leader) have specially-equipped her with skills needed in a faith-based environment. As an illustrator/artist, Beverly specializes in oil portraits and mixed media, using her art therapy training to lead art classes at the center. Beverly studied psychology at St. Petersburg College (St. Petersburg, FL) and is currently working towards certification as a nouthetic pastoral counselor.
